Foreign ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said Sohail was believed to belong to the banned separatist group Hizbul Mujahadeen. According to the Indian Defence Ministry, one soldier and one policeman were killed in the encounter. Three other soldiers were wounded. Indian security forces recovered five AK47 rifles, two pistols, two radios and a quantity of ammunition.
