One of the most challenging things every human being faces in this life is not giving in to the temptation to avenge ourselves. Other people hurt us and do us wrong, sometimes intentionally. Due to our sin nature we all have this natural desire to respond in kind and hurt them back. What the Bible clearly states from beginning to end, is that only God is perfectly just and knows all things. Only He can judge righteously. Therefore, He calls on believers to not avenge themselves and leave vengeance to Him. In Psalm 17, David prays this very prayer: for God to avenge Him. This was hard for David as he was tempted to take the sword into his own hands. And while David asks God to do this based upon his integrity, what he needed, and what we need, is the righteous one, Jesus, to intercede for us. He is the only truly righteous one.
