The BAM Fallhammer test involves a weight dropped on a sample of material to determine what amount of impact energy produces a flash, flame or explosion. Avoiding explosions in the process industries requires being familiar with every characteristic and property of the substances you use, including their sensitivity to impact energy. This is where the BAM Fallhammer test comes in: a falling weight is dropped on a sample to establish at what point the impact results in signs of combustion (flash, flame or explosion). Multiple trials may be required to identify the lowest impact energy necessary to produce this effect. The test is part of the UN test series 3, which assesses the sensitivity of a substance to impact, friction, heat and flame.
