SOUNDBITE (Thai) Vox pop, No name given, Red Shirt protester: "I am not going back because I am going to help the Red Shirts fight for democracy here." 11. Various of people throwing water at each other in central Bangkok streets STORYLINE Red Shift protesters took a break from the long-running rallies and demonstrations on Tuesday, for the start of the Thai New Year holiday, "Songkran". Bangkok''s popular touristic area of Khao San Road was the scene of some of Saturday''s bloody battles between the army and protesters. However on Tuesday, on Bangkok''s Khao San Road, locals and tourists fought good-humoured battles throughout the day. Throughout the country people spend the three days of the new year festival trying to soak each other with water, friends and strangers alike. Songkran marks the new lunar year in Thailand. Among the crowd of tourists, Red Shirt protesters could be seen, smearing each other with moist talcum powder, another Thai New Year pastime. Close by, at the Democracy Monument intersection where more fighting took place, damaged military vehicles remained on the street. No water play took place near the spots where people were killed. The celebrations come as Thailand''s coalition government teetered after the Election Commission ordered the ruling party be dissolved for allegedly concealing campaign donations and the influential army commander said he supports a new vote. Monday''s Election Commission ruling and the army chief''s opinion buoyed anti-government protesters who have demonstrated for the past month pressing for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva''s resignation. The standoff turned deadly on Saturday when troops tried to drive away a large group of protesters, resulting in clashes that left 21 people dead in Thailand''s worst political violence in nearly two decades. Meanwhile, in Washington, Thailand''s Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya lashed out at former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra - whose ouster in a 2006 coup exposed the country''s deep political divisions, accusing Thaksin of personally instigating the recent deadly clashes. Speaking on Monday on the sidelines of a global nuclear summit in Washington, Kasit compared Thaksin to dictators like Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin and to the militant movement al-Qaida. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Thailand to embrace reconciliation. The commission was scheduled to unveil its ruling on April 20, but announced it more than a week early without explanation. No date has been set to hear the case.
