Eric Clapton? One of the best guitarists of all time: the only artist to have been inducted three times into the Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame! The Englishman notably played in The Yardbirds and Cream; sold more than 100 million records worldwide; popularized Bob Marley (who would have also been 80 years old this year); or even received 18 Grammys. But Clapton is also a life between alcoholism, drug addiction, accidental death of his 5-year-old son and especially a thwarted love recounted in "Layla". The song is inspired by the Persian poem The Story of Layla and Majnun (Nizami Ganiavi), dating from the 12th century. The story? A guy going crazy because he can't marry the object of his love. A metaphor for Clapton's feelings for Pattie Boyd: the girlfriend of George Harrison, ex-guitarist of the Beatles. A woman to whom he declared his love two years ago, but without result. Hence the lyrics: "Layla, you make me fall to my knees Layla, please darling Layla, won't you soothe my tormented mind?" » The riff is inspired by a song by Albert King, in a speed version: “As The Years Go Passing By”. Thanks to Duane Allman who transformed the ballad into rock. Apart from the slides, we also owe him the sound of the “crying bird” at the end of the song. A tribute to jazzman Charlie Parker. Jim Gordon took care of the piano part (which he actually stole from his Ex and which can also be found on a Booker T. Jones album). Part added well after the first recording. Pattie Boyd left Harrison in 74 (he was cheating on her with Ringo Starr's wife) She married Clapton in 79. Alas, the couple divorced in 88... Clapton wrote her "Old Love" the following year... A title present on his MTV Unplugged in 92, as well as "Layla" in a FINALLY peaceful version.
