Two years after the unrest started in 2019, many are seeking asylum in Western countries, including Australia, Britain and the United States. Among the activists now in the US is a 26-year-old who asked to be identified as “Kenny” who faces multiple charges back home. He said he has been struggling with mixed feelings about leaving others behind, and is now trying to do all he can to give something back to his hometown. “Kenny” compares his work with other exiled Hong Kong activists to “buying an indulgence to ease my guilt”.
