Australia took on the might and technology of the US in the equivalent of Track Cycling's America's Cup with a Gold Medal 4km Team Pursuit ride off in the final of the 1984 LA Olympic Games. Against all odds Australia won against the home Country which pulled out all stops to win no matter what in a classic David vs Goliath victory! This showdown is full of a huge amount of drama along the way with the US having 3 starts in Qualifying after crashes and mechanical issues and winning their Quarterfinal to Denmark by only 1/100th of a second. Australia had to beat the fastest Qualifiers Italy in their Semi to get through to the final. #cycle2max #olympicgold #trackcycling If you're enjoying these videos please subscribe here: / @acko2k Facebook Story Post: Previously I had said that Kenrick Tucker was my first idol and set the ignition for me to start cycling but the 1984 Olympic Gold won by Australia was the fuel to the fire. It burnt a powerful seed into my head and my dream was born. It took me from being a cycle speedway rider to a cyclist which required a significant amount of discipline and dedication at any level. Little did I know that I would cross paths in more ways than one with the four Golden Aussies that inspired this young kid to follow in their footsteps! Four years on in 1988 I was already moving up the pathway and being coached at South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) by Michael Turtur as a young Junior rider. Ironically I am literally in his shoes now as the current head coach at SASI. I’ve also mentioned in a previous post that in 1991 I went to my first Tassie carnivals and won the Devonport Wheel. The person who was instrumental in that was Michael Grenda. Eight scratch men made it into that final including Danny Clark Oam Oly and Wayne McCarney along with Michael himself and everyone was fighting for their right to be the man on the back and that man is usually best positioned to win the big wheel races. It was Mick who stood up for this teenager amongst men and said I was the best man for the job that day! I’ve never forgotten it. 🙏 Dean Woods was still young enough at the time that we would race together on many occasions in the coming years including winning a Commonwealth Gold and Olympic bronze together along with an Aussie title Madison amongst other races. I still credit him with being a big reason I won the 94 Commonwealth Points race also! Kevin Nichols and I don’t know each other anywhere near as well but we both went to 3 x Olympics chasing that dream of gold and we both achieved it at the same old age of 29 years so I respectfully understand what it means to chase that dream for so long and how much sweeter the victory is when you finally get there. He’s also the kind of guy that when it comes to picking a good roommate that’s going to calm your nerves, make you laugh plenty and settle you with his enormous experience, he’s the guy I’d pick! Charlie Walsh of course would end up being my coach and that pursuit back to gold 16 years later would funnily enough end up being in an event called the Madison and not the Teams Pursuit after all. Along the way though there would be plenty of memories in that journey but no one can deny he changed the course of cycling in Australia and is still by far our most successful and polarising Olympic coach. What a lot of people probably don’t realise is the 84 Olympic win had huge drama especially on the American side. The Aussies had some luck but you don’t win the big races without a bit of luck especially in cycling! The Aussies were also dealt many obstacles and challenges with injuries and inferior equipment as well as an American team hell bent on winning at all costs. The disc wheel was introduced that year also which is proven to have a huge advantage. The technology still exists today. Yet the Aussies had none of this! In simple terms they had some good structural guidance and what matters most in sport - Heart, Inspiration and a Dream
