Nationality & Borders Bill - A Threat to Us All (March 2022)

The Nationality and Borders Bill became an Act of parliament in April 2022. The Act increases the threat posed to people fleeing persecution and danger. This seminar explores how globalising capital has undermined notions of both local and global citizenship and asks, ‘who benefits?’ as well as how the Labour Party can make a suitably robust response to the Bill. We invited experts in the field to speak on these themes: Edie Friedman is Executive Director of Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE). She is a regular speaker and writer on race and asylum issues, authoring and co-authoring books and educational resources. Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi is a founding member and Media Officer of Jewish Voice for Labour and has played a prominent part in anti-racist and Palestine solidarity work for many years. Nira Yuval-Davis is Professor Emeritus, Honorary Director of the Research Centre on Migration, Refugees and Belonging (CMRB) at the University of East London. She is active against racism and sexism in Israel and other settler colonial societies as well as in the UK. JVL SEMINARS Throughout the year JVL present seminars for members and invited friends.
