A clear mid-winter weather window inspired me to head out on my first snowshoe winter camping experience. The trip was filled with solitude, perfect weather, conifer forest and historic sites. Join me on my latest adventure! All drone footage was taken from outside of the wilderness area in accordance with regulations. THIS HIKE I started the trip off Hwy 35 (aka Mount Hood Scenic Byway) at Barlow Pass Sno-Park, followed the Pacific Crest Trail to Lower Twin Lake for lunch and then went to Upper Twin Lake to spend the night. After a beautiful sunrise over Mt. Hood I continued the loop, heading to Palmateer Point, down the valley to Devil's Half Acre Meadow and finally up the Historic Barlow Wagon Route back to the trailhead. All said it was 11.25 miles round-trip and a total of 2000ft. of elevation gain. Twin lakes and Palmateer point are both popular destinations even mid-winter so the trail is well marked with blazes and well trod by snowshoers and skiers. However be aware that there are some sections if you do this loop that are not well tracked including a section from Upper Twin Lake to Palmateer Point and the section from Palmateer Point down to Devil's Half Acre Meadow. Be sure to tell someone where you are going and carry a hardcopy map of the area. Feel free to reach with any questions and I'll try and supply some beta. As always be sure to check the USFS website and call the ranger station for the most up to date conditions and status reports: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mthoo...
