Dirty DIY with Drew Episode 5: Paddles Part1

Hey everybody! Sadly I didn't have time to complete the project after deciding the initial version wasn't up to my quality standards, however depending on your design this video will take you all the way up to finishing your project, next week I'll have a video posted with my finishing technique and the modifications I plan to make to complete the project. Materials: 5.5 x 1" Red Oak board (but you can use any hardwood in any size that fits your design) Finishing supplies as you see fit, Sandpaper, Tack Cloth, Paint, Stain, Polyurethane, you name it. Tools: A good saw for cutting corners and curves like a scroll saw, jig saw, coping saw etc. If you plan on adding holes for airflow a drill A scraper or wood planer for carving the handle and smoothing edges A power sander would be a real plus on this project, I did the sanding by hand but it took 3 days Directions: Draw your paddle out onto your wood, just start with a rough sketch for what you want, then come back with a straight edge and ensure your lines are even. If you need help drawing circles, find a cup, roll of duct tape, something that can help you draw neat perfect curves Cut out your pattern carefully using your curve saw, be mindful of how your using the blade to ensure your cuts are level and smooth Use your scraper to even out any cut-marks, soften your edges and carve the handle, go with the grain and just shape it slowly using very little pressure to gently carve the handle and edges to your satisfaction Measure your paddle and evenly space any airflow holes you may want. finish these with your scraper or some sandpaper to ensure the rough edges are clean and free of tool-marks. If you want to sand the inside of the holes wrap some sand paper around a number 2 pencil and work it in and out... work it good... Sanding, Sanding and MORE SANDING!!!! Again the goal is to smooth out all the rougher techniques you've used so far, if your not sure if it's sanded enough it's not. If you want to see your progress tack cloth off the wood and gently rub your hand over the surface, feel for any imperfections and then sand again. Finish your project, either with a clear-coat, paint, stain... however you want to do it. Next week we'll be talking about ways to further customize your project and make it tailored to you more specifically. I'm going to show how to do a nice leather wrapped padded grip, how to counterbalance the paddle (or at least how I'm going to it) and my finishing process.
