(2 Apr 2007) HEADLINE: New schoolhouse, new hope for Amish children --------------------------------------- CAPTION: Amish children carrying lunch pails arrived Monday morning at a new school symbolizing a new beginning for the students who survived a shooting that killed five of their classmates exactly six months ago. (April 2) --------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] With lunch pails in hand, these Amish students made their way through a fog-shrouded field to their new one-room schoolhouse. The New Hope Amish School marks a fresh beginning for students who survived a school shooting exactly six months ago. SOT; I THINK THEY LOOK FORWARD TO NEW BIRTH, NEW HOPE, NEW ACTIVITIES FOR THEIR CHILDREN AND GETTING BACK TO WHERE THEY WERE BEFORE THE TRAGEDY Daniel Baughman/Neighbor The new Lancaster County school sits a few hundreds yards from the spot where Charles Roberts shot ten girls before turning the gun on himself as police closed in. Five girls were killed during the rampage inside West Nickel Mines Amish School. A sixth remains on a feeding tube and isn't able to communicate. The building was torn down ten days after the rampage... and students had been attending class in a garage-type building since the shooting. SOT: YOU COULDN'T SEND KIDS BACK INTO A ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE WHERE THAT KIND OF CARNAGE TOOK PLACE. THE MEMORIES WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO RAW, TOO FRESH. TO BE HONEST, THOSE MEMORIES WILL BE THERE THROUGH THOSE STUDNETS LIVES. WHY MAKE THEM FRESH EACH DAY? TAKE THE BUILDING DOWN, don't EVEN LEAVE A FRESHPRINT THERE DOUGLAS HILEMAN, PASTOR, MIDDLE OCTORARA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The New Hope Amish School is more secure with a steel door that locks from the inside and is reachable only by a private drive. And it sits behind a row of non-Amish homes, which provides a way to quickly get help in the event of an emergency. More than four million dollars was donated after the deadly attack, part of that money helped fund the new school's construction.
