UPDATE: Improved batteries and controls, and added lights (including ditch lights) in this video: • Victoria BC: Ditch lights & upgraded batte... This is a Mike’s Train House Rugged Rails Canadian Pacific Dash 8 0 gauge toy train engine, or as the British say “coarse scale.” I enjoyed modifying it. Gone is the need for the centre third rail. Now I can run this loco on any 32 mm gauge track - along with my 16 mm to the foot scale live steam engines. My conversion is done with just materials on hand. For instance, the original electronics in this engine included an horn and bell chime. I sacrificed those to have an engine I can now easily run anywhere. But the sound level was controlled with a tiny potentiometer, which I recycled to operate the motors. My three conversions to date cost very little. Otherwise, there are commercially available battery conversions - including with digital radio control. With the advances in rechargeable batteries and other technology I am having difficulty seeing why new toy and model trains in the bigger scales still depend on track power. I noticed that PIKO makes some battery locos with their own RC controllers now. That’s great. My two other locos converted to battery to date are a K-Line 1:48 scale (but made for third rail) Fairbanks Morse Train Master, which I repainted and a K-line MP15 switcher I repainted as well. There are videos on my channel showing these as well, including how I will add headlights to this loco. Now when I don’t have time to run my Accucraft or Mamod live steam engines I have yet another option for a quick train run. I’m glad I dual gauged my G scale track. Happy railroading! Terry
