Mood disorders tend to be episodic in nature, and are TREATABLE MEDICAL ILLNESSES. However, when someone is in a depression or distressing mood state, they often feel like they are never going to get better, or they cannot be treated, which is not true. Treatment may involve behavioral modification, psychotherapy and/or medication management. Treatment can not only pull someone out of a mood episode (like depression) but can prevent future medical mood episodes as well. It is also important to see a medical provider, as many medical conditions can mimic mood disorders. Cardiac, neurological, hormonal and other medical conditions can cause mood changes. Substances (like medications for other medical conditions), drugs and alcohol can also affect mood.
