I Want My Stoma Closed: Optimal Evaluation, Timing and Performance of Surgery Description: Temporary intestinal stomas are common following a variety of surgical procedures performed in planned, staged surgery as well as emergency surgery. Often the subsequent operations can be challenging due to hostile abdomens, underlying disease processes, prior complications, and a desire by patients to have their stomas closed as soon as possible. This session discusses the underlying disease processes that led to the stoma creation, evaluation of present anatomy so that decision-making prior to the operating room can be anticipated, and optimal timing. In addition, technical pearls and tips for operating in a reoperative field, management of blood supply and reach issues, and indications for second temporary ileostomies to allow for complex anastomoses to heal are provided.
