How You Can Upcycle from Emily Leary and VoucherCodesPro

Today I'm going to share with you three of my favourite upcycling projects and I reckon you'll soon share my love of turning everyday objects into super cool trinkets, tools, furniture and accessories. So first up, I'm going to show you how to make some super cool coasters like these. Now an idea like this does require a couple of items of craft kit but once you've got those you can use them in all sorts of projects and they will more than pay their own way. So, here are some old coasters that I did love but the kids have scribbled on. So they've had it but they still have the cork back, so I'm going to show you how to make them pretty. First I've picked a few striking images from an old magazine and set them to one side. Now get your coaster and sand it all over with some sand paper, just to create a bit of grip on the surface. Then give it a good spray with spray mount - this costs a few pounds from a craft shope - spray from about 15 cm away then press the magazine page straight on top. You could use book pages or newspaper, or even the kids drawings although if the pages are thin, you might need to build up a few layers. Leave that to dry, then turn it over and on a board cut really carefully around the edges with a craft knife. By this stage it should already be looking great but then you just need to finish with a few layers of spray acrylic varnish - which again you can get from good craft stores for just a few pounds. It usually takes about three layers of varnish sprayed from about 30 cm away. Let it dry for about 15 minutes between each coat to get a sturdy finish. this is a jumper I don't wear anymore jumper laid out on table now, if I pull here and here separate the pieces you can see I've cut into it. Here are the ones I made earlier - they're really cute I think and totally personal to you. Okay next project and this is a really quick one borrowed from Heidi at Purged on a Whim. Here's a jumper I don't wear any more and I've cut off the sleeves and then I've cut a big curved section from the neck, in between the shoulders - so think kind of eighties, dramatic, scoop neck vest and you get the idea. Okay so now, with my sewing machine I'm going to turn this inside out, sew along the bottom edge, turn it the right way up again and I'll have a slouchy bag. This idea should work with any sweater as long as it's not the type to unravel as you cut it and if you have a bit more time, you could hem the handles for a neater look. Ok, so the final project I want to show you is upcycling a clock, which is super fun and easy. Here is an old clock that I really don't want any more because the glass in the face broke, but the mechanism is still working. So I'm going to re purpose it on to something else. I've unscrewed and twisted the bolt out from the back, so all of these pieces have come loose and I've got the mechanism from the back. What I'm going to do is drill a hole through this board. At this stage you could hang it as it is, or add numbers - it's really up to you but the possibilities are endless anything could be a clock. That's it for now.
