This video covers one of the major changes to special amusement buildings in NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®, 2021 edition. The code introduces three new subclassifications for special amusement buildings, which may be found in a variety of places, including theme parks, carnivals, and fairs. Requirements for special amusement buildings were added to the 1988 edition of the Life Safety Code, following a deadly fire in a haunted castle attraction. Between the 1988 and 2018 editions, not many major changes were made to the special amusement building requirements. New to the 2021 edition, subsection 12.4.9 introduced new subclassifications. The key factors in determining the appropriate subclassification are whether the building is permanently installed and whether it has a ride or device that prevents patrons from self-evacuating.
