Dr. Girish Nelivigi | Appointment booking no :70222 09038 / 08048668768 Consultant Urologist and Andrologist|Nelivigi Multispeciality Hospital, Bengaluru The treatment of stones in the kidney depend upon the size of the stones in the kidney. However in children any treatment involves administering general anesthesia to the child. Therefore even though there are various modalities of treatment, it comes to 1 or 2 ways of treatment of stones in children. For small stones, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy is one way of treating stones here shock waves come form outside the body, enter form the skin into the kidney, fragment the site and the child passes the stone fragments in the urine, this is done under general anesthesia basis even though it doesn’t cause any pain, you will have to remain stiff during the procedure. The second way of treating stones in children is by Endoscopy. Endoscopy could be a flexible endoscope where under anesthesia flexible endoscope is introduced into the penis into the urethra and into the kidney and laser energy is used to break the stone into small pieces subsequently these small pieces which are 1 to 2 mm in size are passed out in urine by the child. The other form of endoscopy are reserved for stones lager in size is called a PCNL, that is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. Even a small cut is made in the back, where a small hole is made in the back and an endoscope measuring 2 to 3 mms is passed into the kidney and the stone is broken and the stone fragments are removed through the endoscope itself the other modalities for removing one is open surgery this is rarely sued and is used only when the stone is large. #KidneyStoneChild #PercutaneousNephrolithotomy #KidneyStone #ExtracorporealShockWaveLithotripsy
