The Okutama Ropeway was a tourist cable car system that once operated in Okutama Town, located in the western part of Tokyo. Officially named the "Kawano Ropeway," it opened in 1962. The 622-meter-long route connected Kawano Station to the trailhead of Mount Mitou, offering a scenic experience amid the area's rich natural surroundings and attracting tourists and hikers alike. However, with the advancement of motorization and the diversification of transportation options, the number of users gradually declined. Unable to remain profitable, the ropeway ceased operations in 1966. Since then, the facilities have been left abandoned, with stations and supporting structures remaining as ruins. Over time, these structures have been overtaken by nature, creating a uniquely nostalgic atmosphere that has drawn the interest of ruin enthusiasts and photographers.
