Places to see in ( Valence - France ) Parc Jouvet

Places to see in ( Valence - France ) Parc Jouvet The Jouvet Park is a park of 7 hectares ( 72,500 m 2 ) located in the municipality of Valencia , near the Rhône , in the esplanade of the Champ de Mars , in line with the castle of Crussol and the Vivarais Mountains . A veritable green lung of the city center, the park bears the name of Theodore Jouvet (1837-1905), the generous donor who offered the city of Valencia the sum necessary for the purchase of the land. In the xix th century, instead of Jouvet park were the lands of the Robine (the name of the source of water passing through them) between the Champ de Mars and the Rhone. Various projects futures pointed to raze what was initially a meadow and small gardens, to build it in the middle of the xix th century, a railway station and a housing estate and finally a high school. At the end of the same century, the owners decided to sell their plot of 6.5 ha. On 20 December 1900 , the City Council decided to buy land motivated by the need of green spaces and safeguarding the panorama of the Rhone and the Vivarais. It is only in 1902 that the lands are bought, after Théodore Jouvet ( 1837 - 1905 ), Bordeaux wine merchant, donate to the city of Valencia for the acquisition of the land and the realization of a park. At the beginning of the same year is launched a national competition to design the park. It will not be less than fourteen proposals that are filed with the mayor including some emanating from landscape architects of international renown, such as Jules Vacherot, co-winner of Edouard Redont of Reims, the third prize going to Eugène Touret of Paris . Given the high cost of the various projects, the construction of the park is entrusted to Alphonse Clerc, director of the Bridges and Roads of Drôme , and landscape architect Henry Martinet. They take back the winning projects during the competition, in order to create a new execution plan. The construction is delegated to Henri Nivet de Limoges, only to start on July 15th, 1903 . Two years later, on August 13, 1905 , the President of the Republic Émile Loubet , native of Drôme, inaugurates what is the first public park of Valence, as well as the stone bridge crossing the Rhone, designed by Alphonse Clerc, and which is now gone. On the same date, he inaugurates the boys' college, which will become the high school bearing his name today.
