Today's global food system is vulnerable and inadequate. Global hunger and malnutrition persist at unacceptably high levels, with nearly 870 million persons undernourished and more than two billion suffering from micronutrient deficiencies. At the current trajectory, the world will not meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. Although there have been significant discussions about food and nutrition security throughout the international community, these talks generally have not turned into concrete actions on the important fronts. In this video, Dr. Shenggen Fan, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute, joins UNU Rector David M. Malone for a conversation focusing on the release of the 2012 global food policy report, entitled "Walk the Talk: Ending Hunger by 2025". The conversation highlights the major food policy developments of 2012, including changes in global agricultural productivity growth; developments in moving toward a green economy and sustainability; and the effect of developed-country farm policies on agriculture in developing countries.
