Doug Laux CIA | Building A Baseline Former CIA case officer and NYT best-selling author, Doug Laux, discusses some of the nuances of the reality of being in the Central Intelligence Agency versus what you typically see in movies and on TV. Doug previously co-starred on the hit reality Bravo TV show, Spy Games, and also starred in and produced Finding Escobar's Millions. Doug wrote a NYT best-selling memoir, Left of Boom, detailing his time serving as a covert operative that went undercover for eight years in the Middle East in order to infiltrate the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. In this video, Doug talks about the common misconception that you can be taught to "spy the lie" and identify a liar in mere seconds simply by their body gestures and movement of their eyes. This is, in fact, the lie and not at all something the CIA teaches their officers. Instead, they teach you that the only way you can determine if someone is lying to you is through having a "baseline" on that individual -- through what they generally say, how they say it, and how they regularly present themselves. Once you have established a baseline, you know what is typical behavior for them and can therefore more easily spot an abnormality. Bottom line: it takes time. For every fraud out there claiming to have spent time in the CIA, Doug is one of the few former case officers and operatives that has been confirmed directly by the Agency. The CIA even went as far as acknowledging and redacting much of his memoir before it was published. Follow Doug's channel to learn more about his time in the CIA and to pick up tips and tricks to help you determine if you might have a friend or relative that is also leading the real life version of a spy's double-life or if you've simply encountered another Hollywood fraud.
