Cuban Cigar Maker Seeking New Guinness World Rrecord

Cuban cigar expert Jose Castelar has set out to roll the world's longest cigar in a bid to better his previous Guinness World Record of 81.8 meters he scored five years ago. Castelar, 72, is a world renowned cigar master, who has set the Guinness World Record five times. His previous records were 11.04 meters in 2001, 14.86 meters in 2003, 20.41 meters in 2005, and 45.38 meters in 2008. The cigar expert is working with five assistants and plans to finish the project before Aug 12. The cigar rollers are now sitting 8 hours a day by the 100-meter-long operation table, striving to garner a new record in the Guinness Book. "The difficulty about rolling the cigar is our physical problems. Our hands have become swollen and shoulders, hurt. It takes a lot of energy. In addition, the stogie already rolled may be broken as it is too long. So we have to stop and fix it before resuming our work," said Castelar. To keep every part of the mega stogie in good condition, Castelar and his assistants are using newspaper to wrap the tube they make every day to keep it humid and straight. They will replace the newspaper with premium tobacco leaves once they finish rolling the whole cigar. "As a Cuban, I want to set a record for Cuba, because the best cigars are from Cuba and the record of making the longest cigar should be kept by Cubans," said the cigar expert.
