In these last few months we witnessed some of the most corrupted forms of police brutality, violent arrests, assaults, modern day lynching, and cold blooded murder! The death of Floyd George, Breonna Taylor, and many others, sparked a national outrage, and rightful uproar! This continued public display of modern day lynching, and the intensity of state violence in the black community, considering the history of this country, it should tell us all, what we need to know. Policing derived from slavery. From slave patrol to police patrol. These patrols were created to capture and return slaves in addition to instilling fear so the slaves would not be able to escape. Policing was and still is used as a means to control and to instill fear. The involvement and influence of the Ku Klux Klan in law enforcement dates back to these early years and generational ideologies and generational families of law enforcement have allowed that mentality to continue to impact today’s police operations. The impact is evident in the lack of people of color on police forces when they began and the laws that supported police departments’ unspoken mission of fear and control.
