Aniridia is a serious and rare genetic eye disorder that affects the colored part of the eye (iris). Aniridia means lack of an iris. With this condition, the iris is partly or fully gone. The pupil is abnormally large and may be oddly shaped. This condition often affects both eyes Can you see with aniridia? Aniridia is marked by partial or complete absence of the iris of the eye. Vision is preserved in some patients with mild cases of aniridia. This condition occurs when the iris fails to develop normally before birth in one or both eyes. Typically, aniridia can be seen from birth. What causes aniridia? Aniridia is caused by mutations in the PAX6 gene. The PAX6 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is involved in the early development of the eyes, brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), and the pancreas. Is there a cure for aniridia? Unfortunately, there is no treatment to cure aniridia at the moment. There are treatments available for some of the eye conditions associated with aniridia, such as cataracts, glaucoma or keratopathy. What does aniridia look like? The word aniridia implies that there is “no iris,” but in fact there is a small ring of iris tissue present which is variable in size. Because the iris tissue is so small, the pupil is very large and may be irregularly shaped. Aniridia is a bilateral condition, meaning it is present in both eyes. How do you know if you have aniridia? Aniridia can cause many symptoms, such as: Poor vision (not always present) More sensitivity to light. Fast, uncontrolled, shaking "to and fro" eye movements (nystagmus) What does WAGR syndrome stand for? WAGR is an acronym for Wilms tumor, Aniridia, Genitourinary problems (such as undescended testicles or hypospadias in males, or internal genital or urinary anomalies in females), and Range of developmental delays. What percentage of patients with aniridia develop glaucoma? With a reported incidence of 6% to 75% glaucoma remains one of the most challenging features of aniridia. The higher percentage may represent an overestimation from academic glaucoma centers; a more accurate estimate may be around 50%. Congenital glaucoma associated with buphthalmos is rare in aniridia. How many people have WAGR? The prevalence of WAGR syndrome ranges from 1 in 500,000 to one million individuals. It is estimated that one-third of people with aniridia actually have WAGR syndrome. Approximately 7 in 1,000 cases of Wilms tumor can be attributed to WAGR syndrome. How does aniridia cause glaucoma? Glaucoma is a common problem in aniridia, which may cause progressive vision loss. A proposed mechanism for aniridic glaucoma is peripheral anterior synechiae formation and progressive angle closure. Can you be born without an iris? Aniridia is the absence of the iris, usually involving both eyes. It can be congenital or caused by a penetrant injury. Isolated aniridia is a congenital disorder which is not limited to a defect in iris development, but is a panocular condition with macular and optic nerve hypoplasia, cataract, and corneal changes. How common is aniridia? In the general population, aniridia occurs in 1 per 50,000-100,000 people and the incidence varies in different regions. How does aniridia affect sight? Aniridia can cause reduction in the sharpness of vision (visual acuity) and increased sensitivity to light (photophobia). People with aniridia can also have other eye problems. Increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma ) typically appears in late childhood or early adolescence.
