On September 18, 1960, Fidel Castro arrived in New York City with the Cuban delegation to the United Nations, just 17 months after his first U.S. visit following the 1959 Cuban Revolution. This video explores Castro’s rise to leadership, his meetings with U.S. officials including Vice President Richard Nixon, his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and at the Council on Foreign Relations, and his stay at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem where he met with Malcolm X and Langston Hughes. We look at the Cold War context surrounding his nationalization of industries, the U.S. trade embargo, CIA planning that led to the Bay of Pigs, and his record-setting four-hour United Nations speech on September 26, 1960. The story continues with the Cuban Missile Crisis, the shift in U.S.-Cuba relations through the 20th century, and the renewed diplomatic efforts in the 21st century. From the Cuban Revolution and the Cold War to U.S. foreign policy and Fidel Castro’s lasting historical influence, this video examines one of the most important chapters in international history. 00:00 Introduction 00:02- Today in History 06:47 More Events On This Day 07:46 Quiz for This Day in History 08:20 End 👉 Watch more September Today in History Facts here! • Today in History - September ------------------------------------- Join Mr. Louis, a History Guy, and stay tuned to gain insights into the impactful moments that shaped today into a day to remember. ------------------------------------- Why It Matters: Each of these events offers a lesson in courage, resilience, and the power of human spirit.
