While Shakespeare struggles with the dark of Bipolar he embraces his extreme artistic thoughts and consciously steers full throttle from the 'safe'. He is a radical individual and always aims for far beyond the expected. In 1998 Shakespeare decided to embark on a project which would break and abstract the perceived boundaries of cabinetry and sculpture. He would create a piece that had never been attempted before anywhere in the world. He called it Hesperides. Initial inspirations for Hesperides came from Shakespeare's observations of The Sagrada Familia Church in Spain created by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. He knew that conjuring such an incredibly complicated piece would require a re-imagining of Gaudi's methodical approach and importantly he came to the self-realisation that every single shape and curve would be imperative to the whole. When Shakespeare decided that the timbers were to be Tasmanian Huon Pine inlayed with African Ebony he inadvertently found the reason, the theme, which resonated deep beneath his vision of this remarkable piece. The Huon represents the atrocities suffered by Indigenous Australians at the hands of the white, and the Ebony is the blood shed by the countless slaughtered. The Huon has an over-powering dominance yet the strength of the Ebony is unmistakable, unforgettable and absolutely imperative. The cost of the project both mentally and financially to Shakespeare was huge but irrelevant. What has been achieved is absolute perfection in every square inch, every conceivable way and the result is a cabinet metamorphosed into a living sculpture. From birth to its full beautiful form every curve has absolute intention in shaping this metamorphosis and, with female and male genitalia; it is neither man nor woman. It is androgynous; it is the 'god of the night'. Hesperides was entirely hand carved, taking some 5000 hours, and so for Shakespeare it is a living sculpture that will always have an indelible presence. It can be viewed on so many levels and discussed in so many ways. contact: +61 404507257 robshake@bigpond.net.au
