In this video, I’m based in Panajachel before crossing the lake by boat to explore San Juan La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, and Santiago Atitlán — three towns that reveal very different sides of life on Guatemala’s most famous lake. Along the way, I look at how Lake Atitlán was formed, why the Maya once called it “the navel of the world,” and how its communities continue to live between volcanoes, water, and tradition. From artist cooperatives and backstrap weaving in San Juan… to the backpacker-meets-local life of San Pedro… to the deeply traditional and spiritual heart of Santiago Atitlán, this is a journey across one lake and through several distinct cultures.
