For Armaghanyan, who is Armenian, influenced by war and the history of the Armenian Genocide, she has been curious about the notion of belonging and how it can be shaped. Van Geel gave Armaghanyan the freedom to write a text that is close to her experience. Her experience of living and working in different countries deepened the question “What does it mean to belong somewhere?”. For Armaghanyan herself, her sense of belonging changed throughout her life. 'Belonging' was no longer associated with a geographical place, but with a series of experiences, feelings and encounters: some tangible, others abstract. In her text she approaches the different components of belonging; belonging, belonging somewhere, can be done in different places and in different ways. Van Geel wrote a sound work based on Armaghanyan's texts, where the text was the starting point for intuitive musical associations. Musically, Van Geel integrated, as is often the case in his compositions, influences from many different genres. We hear jazz harmonies, elements of old music or an Arabic groove. Van Geel was also inspired by the folk music that was performed in 10 years of Chamber Choir JIP. The improvisation element is typical of Van Geel's work: in Belonging, singer Behrang Alibabaei improvises in Farsi.
