Just off the 404 highway in Markham, there's a totally normal suburb— except for one thing. There's a strange, big cathedral in the middle of it. The suburb is called Cathedraltown (a little on the nose) and the cathedral is the Cathedral of Transfiguration. The cathedral has a vaguely creep feel— in part because it's feels abandoned. Or if not abandoned, at least not in active use with occasional construction being done. But it's also beautiful and sort of imposing. It's hard to miss when you drive by it. The cathedral was built by Stephen Roman. Roman was a rich, Slovakian mining executive who built it as a beacon of religious freedom for the his fellow Slavs living under the Soviet Union. (More about Bannon: http://archive.macleans.ca/article/19...) It's weird to find this big, imposing cathedral in the middle of a suburb. And that's kind of cool right. Because suburbs aren't supposed to be weird. They're supposed to be cookie-cutter. But there's nothing cookie cutter about this suburb.
