Wycoller Hall was built in 1550 and was the original home of the Hartley family. It was later owned by the Cunliffe family from the 17th Century. The hall is located in the beautiful hamlet of Wycoller which itself dates back to the 10th century. After the death of Henry Owen-Cunliffe, the last Cunliffe to live at the hall, it was partially dismantled and some material was reused in the construction of other dwellings and structures to help repay the late squires debts. The hall, like several bridges close by (one dating over 1000 years old! (seen in this video)), are all Grade II listed and scheduled monuments. 'Ferndean Manor' in Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre is believed to be based on Wycoller Hall. The Brontë sisters would have no doubt been frequent visitors and the Brontë way passes through Wycoller. The sisters lived only a short distance across the moors in their parsonage home in Haworth. As mentioned, Wycoller Hall was owned by the Cunliffe family and Elizabeth Cunliffe married Thomas Eyre and had two children. The association between Wycoller Hall and the Eyre family would not have escaped Charlotte Brontë’s notice. Parallels have also been drawn with the owner of Ferndean, Mr Rochester's father, and Henry Owen-Cunliffe. Also, a scene from the classic 1970s film, ‘The Railway Children’, was filmed at Wycoller.
