The school was started by the Free Will Baptist, in 1832. In the 1840‘s, the Seminary became a center for the abolitionist movement and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1854, a mysterious fire destroyed the school, but a new building, called the Academy Building, was opened in 1857. Around 1906, Doe Hall was constructed. Due to decreasing student attendance during the World Wars, the school closed down in 1949. Today, the school is run and maintained by the Friends of Parsonsfield Seminary. The place is also claimed to be haunted, with both the Academy Building and Doe Hall having paranormal activity.
