Harvesting Sunflower Seeds by Hand | PNW Zone 8b

Sunflowers are amazing flowers and I always try to grow several different kinds. Even though the sunflowers used for cut flowers have come and gone, but the sunflowers that grew sunflower seeds (not all of them do) are ready. I grow sunflowers for the seeds for a few reasons- mostly because I love them but also to have snacks (sunflower seeds) and also to give farm treats to the chickens and wild birds in the winter. Sunflowers are really easy to grow and interplant with a lot of other crops (pumpkins and winter squash being my favorite). Sunflowers are also drought tolerant so it is okay if you forget some summer waterings. Lastly, the bees absolutely love the sunflowers and I love watching them crawl all over the beautiful yellow flowers.
