Losing your bags can be infuriating when you're at the airport, but when they're hanging beneath your eyes, it can be a welcome change!  One of the concerns I often hear about is dark circles or bags beneath the eyelids that don't seem to go away, even with a good night's sleep. These types of dark circles are not caused by a darkening of the skin; rather they are caused by shadows.  This is the result of light shining (usually from above) and hitting the bulge caused by some excess fat producing a shadow beneath the bag. So we simply need to reduce the bag by removing some fat (without a skin incision) - and the dark shadow goes away! Full transcript: Dr Weiss: Today's Weiss Medical Minute answers the question: Can eyelid surgery take away the bags under my eyes and my tired look? And the answer is yes. The reason why people have a tired look is from two things: Number one, the bulging underneath our eyes, and number two, since light comes from above if hits this bulging and forms a shadow or a dark circle. So basically, when you see a dark circle when somebody looks like they didn't get that much sleep, it's because of a shadow it's not darkening of the skin. Most of the time the bulges can be taken away from behind the eyelid. We just make an incision behind the eyelid and lift out the fat and reestablish a perfect contour so there's very little shadow left. Once in a while we need to shrink the skin wrinkles with a laser or maybe even sometimes do a little surgery to take away some skin, but the most common way of taking out the bags under the eyes is with surgery that does not require skin incision.
