Russian people have been brainwashed with total lies about Ukraine for years through the Russian Primetime media. This has been going on since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. Many (if not most) Russians have been deliberately and continuously misled since then to believe that the Ukrainian people have been taken hostage by some small band of nazis, who are only in power because of the evil "West," and that the war in Ukraine (actually, to them it's a "Special Military Operation") is to liberate the brotherly Ukrainian people from this nazi dictatorship of a few nazis who have been militarized by the evil "West" in order to take over Ukraine, and then probably Russia itself. This propaganda has been steadfastly fed to the population of Russia for 8 years. This means that a typical Russian soldier, who is 18-22, has grown up on that propaganda during all of his formative years. The Russian troops, besides being fed these lies for years prior to the invasion, were not told about and not prepared for the invasion itself. All they knew is that they were gathered in Russia and Belorus for "military training exercises." Many Russian POWs didn't even know where they were going or why. They had very limited access to any media during the exercises preceding the invasion. Many report that their phones were taken from them during these "exercises," and in any event, reception out in the exercise fields was very patchy. Once the Russian soldiers were brought to Ukraine, they were surprised not to be greeted cheerfully by the liberated population, but rather shot at by the population and the Ukrainian army, who were repelling them as unprovoked aggressors. It is only in captivity as POWs that these soldiers now begin to understand what really happed to them, and that Moscow, their TV, and the media there have all been feeding them lies all along, all these years, and that they were not liberators, but aggressors, killers, and occupiers. Many feel extremely ashamed of this and have a hard time reconciling this with their love of their own country, Russia. This video is a compelling example of this.
