Subject-Verb-Prepositional Object (Dative) The SVpOdat pattern describes actions where a verb takes a prepositional object, and the preposition requires the dative case. These verbs cannot take a direct object - they require a specific preposition with a dative object. Key characteristics: The verb takes NO direct object (no accusative) A prepositional object follows with a preposition that requires dative case Common dative prepositions: von (from/of), nach (after/for), zu (to), bei (at/with), mit (with), aus (from/out of), außer (except), seit (since), gegenüber (opposite) Common verbs: träumen (dream), fragen (ask), suchen (search), gehören (belong), helfen (help), danken (thank), gratulieren (congratulate) Each verb requires a specific preposition that must be memorized Important note: The preposition is fixed for each verb - you cannot change it Pattern: Subject + Verb + Preposition + Dative Object Example: "Er träumt von einem Haus" = "He dreams of a house" (von = preposition requiring dative, einem Haus = dative object) #LearnGerman #GermanPhrases #GermanSentences #PracticeGerman #GermanB1 #GermanB2 #GermanGrammar #GermanLinguistics #GermanVerbs #GermanCases #LanguageLearning #DeutschLernen #IntermediateGerman Timestamps: 0:02 träumen — to dream (with von + dative) 1:47 fragen — to ask (with nach + dative) 3:30 suchen — to search (with nach + dative) 5:13 gehören — to belong (with zu + dative) 7:04 helfen — to help (with bei + dative) 8:50 danken — to thank (with für + accusative, but dative person) 10:39 gratulieren — to congratulate (with zu + dative) 12:33 sprechen — to speak (with mit + dative) 14:16 kommen — to come (with von + dative, aus + dative) 15:57 arbeiten — to work (with an + dative, bei + dative) 17:44 Bonusbeispiele — Bonus Examples
