In the vast, rolling plains of South Dakota you can find the ghost town of Okaton. Though the 2023 census records a population of 23, the majority of these residents likely live on nearby farms, as most of the town's buildings are in decay, and there are no longer any operating services or businesses. Okaton’s heyday as a bustling railroad and farming community is long gone. The town was established in the early 1900s when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad expanded westward towards Rapid City. It quickly became home to a mix of railroad workers and resilient homesteaders. For a time, Okaton thrived, with several businesses springing up to support the growing population. However, almost all of those businesses have disappeared, leaving behind little more than memories and weathered ruins. Okaton, located just south of I-90 at Exit 183 in south-central South Dakota, may no longer be the lively community it once was, but it continues to capture the imagination of those who pass through. The town stands as a quiet reminder of the challenges and resilience of life on the Great Plains, its history etched into the fading walls of its abandoned structures.
