In this tutorial, we learn how to generate clean 2D CAD drawings from an imperfect 3D model in Archicad—without falling into the trap of trying to model everything perfectly. The goal is to use the 3D model as a reliable base, then produce professional-looking 2D drawings by tracing and drafting intentionally on top of automatic views. We begin on the Ground Floor and intentionally embrace the “messy” reality of early-stage BIM models: windows may look wrong, wall cuts may be inconsistent, stairs may be imperfect—and that’s fine. Instead of starting from zero, we build a structured setup using folders, saved views, trace references, and worksheets so every drawing has a clear pipeline from model → view → trace → CAD sheet. You’ll learn how to create your own folders like “My Trace References” and “My Worksheets”, save automatic views with correct pen setups, and generate dedicated worksheets for Ground Floor, First Floor, Section, Elevation, and Perspective. Each worksheet becomes a clean 2D “sheet of paper” where you can draft confidently—guided by trace references—but still producing original CAD lines. The crucial step is the design-thinking moment: take screenshots, print them, and plan line hierarchy before drafting. Using the four-pen system (241–244) from the previous video, you’ll define what should be thick, thin, cut, or background—so Archicad becomes a tool that follows your drawing logic, not the other way around. By the end, you’ll have a complete beginner workflow to prepare all key architectural drawings—floor plans, section, elevation, and a 3D perspective drawing—for proper CAD drafting and clean layouts. ⏱️ Timestamps 0:00 Intro: generating 2D CAD from a 3D model in Archicad 0:17 Why your 3D model doesn’t need to be perfect 1:15 Starting with the Ground Floor (messy automatic plan) 1:40 Understanding the provided file structure (views + worksheets) 2:18 Creating folders: “My Trace References” + “My Worksheets” 2:52 Setting Floor Plan Cut Plane (1.00m coupling height) 3:06 Saving the Ground Floor as a trace reference view 3:27 Creating “My Ground Floor” worksheet + setting trace reference 4:00 Drawing a polygon guide to place content in layouts 4:43 Saving worksheet views (Project Map → View Map workflow) 5:03 Repeating the process for the First Story 6:28 The crucial step: screenshot + print + plan line hierarchy 6:57 Planning wall, door, and window line weights (4-pen logic) 9:04 Preparing the First Story sketch plan the same way 10:24 Creating a Section using a favorite marker (B Section) 11:25 Generating the section view and saving it as trace reference 11:56 Creating “My Section” worksheet + placing trace reference 13:23 Planning section drawing: terrain line + window logic 15:09 Creating an Elevation using a marker (B Elevation) 16:13 Reviewing messy auto-elevations and planning linework 17:28 Saving elevation as trace reference + creating worksheet 18:27 Creating a 3D Perspective drawing (3D Document workflow) 19:30 Using the ugly-but-useful auto perspective as a drafting base 21:09 Creating “My Perspective” worksheet + layout guide lines 21:54 Final advice: define your graphic language before drafting 👉 This video is part of the Archicad 2D CAD from 3D Model series. 👉 Next video: CAD drafting the Ground Floor (doors, windows, wall cuts) using the 4-pen method.
