Anatomy of the Ulnar Nerve & Guyon's Canal

http://www.johngibbonsbodymaster.co.uk John Gibbons is a registered Osteopath, Lecturer and Multi-published Author and in this video he will be teaching the anatomy of the Ulnar nerve and also the canal of Guyon in the wrist. The ulnar nerve (C8, T1) initially originates from the spinal roots of C8 and T1 and forms the medial cords. The nerve continues its journey medially down the arm toward the elbow, and passes posterior to the medial epicondyle of the humerus (the nerve is palpable in this area and is a common site for injury). It continues in the forearm and penetrates the two heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle, before traveling along the ulna bone. Upon reaching the wrist, the nerve continues through the tunnel of Guyon, or Guyon’s canal (located between the pisiform and hamate bones of the wrist and superficial to the carpal tunnel), and terminates in the superficial and deep branches. Sensory Supply: The ulnar nerve innervates the medial side of the palm and the corresponding medial dorsal surface, as well as the little finger and half the ring finger. John shows you in his other neurological videos to assess the nerve root level of the adductors (obturator nerve through L3 reflex), patella tendon (femoral nerve through L4 reflex), semitendinosus (tibial / sciatic nerve of L5 reflex) and Achilles / plantar (tibial nerve of sciatic through S1 reflex) and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with Clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury. Any altered reflex will need further investigation as a possibility of disc or neural pathology. These techniques and more is taught on the Neurological Master-Class at the University of Oxford.
