What are Scrutiny readings?

Today's meditation comes from the scripture quote from the fifth Sunday of Lent, Scrutiny A. On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent we set aside a special mass for those who are going to be baptized into the Catholic Church at Easter. These masses contain special rights called the "scrutinies." During this period of scrutiny those to be baptized into the faith make the decision to turn from sin and embrace the light of Christ. The gospel heard in that particular mass with the scrutiny rite is always taken from year A. Those attending all other masses will hear the normal letergical season gospel.
