Sir Edward Bairstow (1874-1946) wrote the famous anthem Save us, O Lord for the Wigan Parish Choral Association Festival in November 1902. He was the organist and music director at that time and had just completed the organ’s reconstruction in 1901. Bairstow’s seamless lines weave in and out of each other, creating an elegant fugato.
