The many Public Houses and Hotels in Whitstable once provided a wide range of establishments catering for a varied range of clientele. The Bear and Key Hotel was probably the largest and was used by the more prosperous section of the community. The working men were more likely to spend their evenings in one of the single room 'Beer Houses', often the front room of one of the smaller dwellings, which provided a single barrel of beer and a few chairs. Over the years the number of Pubs has dwindled, some due to enemy action, to increasing property values and many to the change in social habits. This video, which is based on the book 'Ales and Tales', records the fate of a few of the once popular establishments.
