[Anchor Lead] A team re-investigating the suicide of late actress Chang Ja-yeon has found that the son of the CEO of The Chosun Ilbo, a local newspaper, spoke to the actress on the phone several times. The investigators have also obtained testimony that the newspaper asked police to conceal records of the phone conversations between the two. [Pkg] In a handwritten notice, late actress Chang Ja-yeon wrote that the CEO of her agency asked her to meet with the son of The Chosun Ilbo president surnamed Bang at a bar. Police investigating the incident at the time confirmed that the son of the newspaper company president met with the actress at a bar five months before her death. Bang told police that he did meet with Chang Ja-yeon but had no idea who she was at the time and left the bar ahead of others. Police accepted Bang's testimony and closed the investigation. However, a team re-investigating the actress's death has found that Bang and Chang were likely close enough to speak on the phone frequently. The investigators have obtained a testimony from a key official at The Chosun Ilbo saying that Bang and Chang spoke on the phone on multiple occasions. The official also added that an executive from The Chosun Ilbo told him about how he was trying to get the police to remove the audio of the phone conversations from the investigation file. This means that The Chosun Ilbo used outside pressure on police. Sources say that the investigation file that police handed over to prosecutors in 2009 did not contain the audio of the phone conversations between Bang and Chang. KBS could not reach Bang to confirm the allegation.
