Join me on this relaxing springtime river walk along the Yorkshire Wolds Way from North Ferriby to the Humber Bridge in East Yorkshire, England. This walk starts from the village of North Ferriby and takes us through some beautiful woodland splashed with the yellow of daffodils and buttercups. We walk close to the water's edge of the Humber Estuary with trains passing by, before reaching the old Black Mill and the impressive Humber Bridge. Along the Riverside Walkway which leads all the way to Hessle Foreshore is the site of the earliest sewn plank boats known outside Egypt that were discovered in 1931 by local man Ted Wright on the shore of the Humber. The latest dating technology has determined that the Bronze Age boat could be 4,000 years old, making it Europe’s first known seacraft. In addition, Bronze Age round barrows were found near North Ferriby by archaeologists excavating the land on which the A63 junction was built where there was also evidence of Iron Age and early Romano-British activity. Hessle Whiting Mill aka Black Mill, is a unique example of an early nineteenth century whiting windmill and was built between 1810 and 1815. It was used to crush the chalk and power the adjacent whiting works where further refinement took place. Whiting has been produced in England since the medieval period, when its major use was for colouring internal walls and whitening doorsteps, window ledges and hearths. By the 14th century it was being mixed with size to produce a more durable whitewash or distemper. Since the 18th century whiting has been a major component in the production of linseed oil putty. Production operated as a small scale domestic industry until the 19th century, when increased and varied demand led to large scale production and technological refinements. The Humber Bridge is a 2.22 km single-span road suspension bridge near Kingston upon Hull, England. When it opened to traffic on 24 June 1981, it was the longest of its type in the world; the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge surpassed it in 1998, and it became the thirteenth-longest by 2024.
