Kurnool is a city located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It has a rich historical and cultural background, with traces of human habitation dating back to the Paleolithic era. The region has witnessed the rule of various dynasties and empires over the centuries. During ancient times, Kurnool was a part of the Mauryan Empire and later came under the rule of the Satavahanas, who were known for their patronage of art and culture. The region also saw the influence of the Ikshvakus and the Pallavas. In the medieval period, Kurnool was ruled by the Chalukyas and the Kakatiyas. It was later conquered by the Delhi Sultanate and subsequently passed into the hands of the Vijayanagara Empire. The reign of the Vijayanagara kings brought prosperity and development to the region. After the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, Kurnool came under the control of the Sultanate of Golconda. The region witnessed the rule of the Qutb Shahis and the Mughals before eventually falling under the control of the British East India Company in the 18th century. During the British colonial period, Kurnool served as the capital of the Ceded Districts, which included the present-day regions of Kurnool, Kadapa, and Anantapur. It played a significant role in the freedom struggle of India, with prominent leaders like Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu and Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy hailing from the region. After India gained independence in 1947, Kurnool became a part of the state of Andhra Pradesh. In 1953, it served as the capital of Andhra State until the formation of Andhra Pradesh as a unified state in 1956. Currently, Kurnool is an important cultural, educational, and commercial center in Andhra Pradesh. Kurnool's history is reflected in its numerous historical monuments, temples, and archaeological sites. The city is known for attractions like the Konda Reddy Fort, Belum Caves (the longest cave system in India), the Ahobilam Temple complex, and the Oravakallu Rock Garden. Today, Kurnool continues to thrive as a vibrant city, blending its historical heritage with modern developments.
