Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER I once heard someone say: “But this Gospel passage sounds like the telephone book!” No, it is something else entirely: this Gospel passage is pure history and has an important subject. … God wanted to insert Himself into history. He is with us. He has walked the path with us.… Sinners, who have not responded to all that God had in mind for them. Think of Solomon, so great, so intelligent! And, poor man, he ended up not even knowing his own name! But God was with him. And that’s the beauty of it, isn't it? God is consubstantial with us. He makes history with us. But even more: When God wants to say Who He is, He says “I am the God of Abraham, of Isaac and Jacob”. But what is God’s surname? It is us, each one of us.… His joy was to share His life with us.… As we approach Christmas, let us reflect: If He made His story with us, if He took His surname from us, if He let us write His story, let us at least let Him write our story. And that is holiness: “Letting the Lord write our story”. And that is a Christmas wish for all of us. May the Lord write your story and may you let Him write it for you. Amen!
