[EAC Sydney rally – MC] Friends. We haven't got this far, by politely waiting for things to be given to us. NDIS. [Chairman of the Board NDIS – Kurt Fearnley AO] Our system is broken. [Hon Julia Gillard AC] And we can do better. [Hon Bill Shorten MP – Minister for the NDIS] But people with disability really lived a life of second class citizenship in this country. [Sue – NDIS Participant] Being diagnosed and the years following depression was huge. [Carer] I think that's probably the big word dignity. [EAC Sydney rally – MC] The time has come to make the NDIS real. [Disability advocate] Count me in Australia. [Disability advocate] Count me in Australia. [Crowd] Make it real. [Chairman of the Board NDIS – Kurt Fearnley AO] I propose we look ten years into the future and imagine you looking into the eyes of child who you dearly love. This child has a disability. Will we happily accept that we are still ranked at the bottom of the developed nations on how we cater and support for that child? [Hon Julia Gillard AC] Over the past six years, the idea of a National Disability Insurance Scheme has found a place in our nation's hearts. Disability care starts in seven week’s time and there will be no turning back. [Hon Bill Shorten MP – Minister for the NDIS] I've met with lots of great people, members of Parliament, advocates, people with disability, carers, disability service providers. And together we formed an unstoppable force to create the NDIS. [Kira – NDIS Participant] One of my goals is to be an independent thinker and live life independently. [Devi – Parent of NDIS Participant] We met a planner and she said, Don't worry, there are many other services you can get. [Jackie – NDIS Participant] My solo exhibition I had last year was called Salt and Sand. [Chairman of the Board NDIS – Kurt Fearnley AO] Every single person deserves this level of advocacy that will allow them to be them, to allow them to engage with community. Many times, that's for the very first time. That, on its own is pretty impressive. [End transcript]
