Weekly BobBlast Issue 512 Overlapping Frames = Surprising Results! Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! This BobBlast features another one of my 16 Graphic Design Compositions from my composition chart. Establishing the composition of a painting is something I make a decision about before I begin a painting… my 5Cs. In this BobBlast, I will discuss and demo the composition design called “Overlapping Frames.” When using overlapping frames, you are placing objects over one another to create the illusion of depth. I added overlapping boxes as well, with the title and theme of “Falling Boxes.” I got this idea from real life–I witnessed a stack of boxes falling from a warehouse shelf. With that one concept, I sketched many variations! All compositions have endless variations. I am working on a booklet that will illustrate twelve variations of each of the 16 Graphic Design Compositions. Once I decide on which variation to use when I begin a painting, I begin sketching the composition that communicates my concept. Watch the demo–I pre-cut a variety of different-sized square shapes from my collage papers to get my “falling boxes” started, mixing the textures of collage, along with paint. After the black and white, I go for the color. So first, I select a concept to paint, then select my graphic design composition. Then I work on as many sketches as I can. That’s how I begin a body of work. To learn more about my 5Cs and how I use then to create new work, come to my May Monthly Demo!
