Fragile X syndrome or FXS is a rare genetic condition OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR AUTISM OR ADHD and may take years to be accurately diagnosed. FXS is the most inherited form of developmental and intellectual disability and may often be misdiagnosed as autism or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or diagnosed together with those conditions, which can lead parents to years of frustration without proper therapy and treatment options for their child. A genetic blood test from a blood draw can confirm a diagnosis of FXS. FXS affects both males and females; however females often have milder symptoms than males. The exact number of people who have FXS is unknown, but a review of research studies estimates that approximately 1 in 4,000-7,000 males and approximately 1 in 8,000-11,000 females have been diagnosed with the condition. Currently there are no FDA-approved treatments specifically for the condition, which leaves families feeling isolated and desperate for support. A clinical trial called RECONNECT is currently recruiting and could provide the first approved treatment for FXS. Parents of children with FXS who qualify may find it especially helpful that there is an option to participate in the clinical trial in the comfort of their own homes.
