In 680–681, the Church gathered in Constantinople for the Sixth Ecumenical Council (Constantinople III) to answer the Monothelite controversy: Does Christ have one will, or two? This song celebrates the Council’s confession that **Jesus Christ is one Person in two complete natures—fully God and fully man—and therefore has two natural wills and two natural energies (operations): divine and human, united without confusion and without division. The Council points us to Gethsemane—“Not My will, but Yours”—showing Christ’s true human freedom and perfect obedience, the healing of our will, and the path of salvation.
