The BEST Revision of a Sentence is Simply Changing the Order or Organization of the Words

Attention Reading/ELAR/Writing Teachers: What is the most effective REVISION in sentence 5? 36% average correct this past April in 7th grade When a REVISING question has the key words, "What is the best/most effective REVISION in sentence ___?, all your students are having to do is change the order of the words from that sentence around so that it is organized in ONE way that makes the most sense. The question in this video was like the words mentioned above, which means that all your students had to do was read that sentence only! Unfortunately, only 36% of the 7th graders in Texas were able to get the correct answer by playing what I call "Around the Words in 80 Ways". Since there are always only four answer choices, they just had to play "Around the Words in 4 Ways" to see which answer choice looked and sounded the best. Think of REVISION as looking at something different now than you will later. Because one of the answer choices was "No revision is needed in sentence 5", your students had to decide if the sentence looks better NOW, the way it is already written in the passage, or LATER, one of the other three answer choices. For those of you who are not familiar with revising, your students are looking at a passage and trying to improve the content by using the acronym ARM. They will need to Add, Remove, Replace and/or Move ONE word, phrase, sentence in a paragraph or passage. In the case of the question above, all they needed to do was move the order/organization of the words in the sentence around four different ways and decide which one is the most effective. In the video, I model using a puzzle to help you understand that there is only ONE BEST way to write the order of the words in a sentence in the same way that there is only ONE BEST WAY to put all the pieces of a puzzle together. For those of you who might be wondering why I don't have an S for Substitute, the state has never used that word on the test before. They only use the phrase what ____ could best replace ___? That means that they will be removing ONE thing and replacing it with another. I highly suggest that you make an anchor chart that only has ARM, not ARMS.
